Sun CEO jabs at competitors, sees bright future for company

partial quotation of McNealy

"Everything ought to be connected to the Internet so that I don't have to be connected to the Internet," he said. "Even lightbulbs."

He told investors that eventually every device with a digital or electronic heartbeat, including lightbulbs, would be connected to the Web one day, driving enormous growth for Sun servers.

McNealy, who is also on the board of directors for General Electric Co. <GE.N>, said: "When it becomes clear that a lightbulb is at 95 percent of its duty cycle, GE's factory could be building another lightbulb just like it, and it comes in a box with a shipping label and a map of where to put it."

"Then GE stops being a lightbulb company, and starts being a lighting company," he said. "And everything that happens on the Web is going to create demand for our servers."

I just hope such is not the expertise that was sought for the GE Board of Directors. Lightbulbs? with a microP to determine performance (especially at SUN's prices)? I think McNealy needs a little education and may want to bring in Texas Instruments in the deal - DSP's on lightbulbs would be so much more cost effective! And why not just reach out with a fiber optic light sources and forget about the lightbulbs - GLW anyone? There is a little more to this world than the digital aspect of the Internet servers from SUN!!! Does anyone care?

I think GE ought to have all the interest in SUNW, TXN, GLW and their technologies (others too). But I would refrain for several quarters from adding microP's to the lightbulbs specs. Maybe the "Web"-esizing should happen at a higher cost basis device first.
