Jay, a Nikon 990 may meet or beat an "ordinary" camera but an 8+ megapixel digicam would be needed to match the resolution of a professional-grade SLR. Unfortunately, it takes 4 times the pixels to double the resolution. Unless you're a pro on an architectural shoot or you work for National Geographic, you probably won't notice the difference based strictly on resolution. And with >8MB to store just one uncompressed 3 megapixel image, most people will rely upon lower resolutions or image compression in day-to-day use. Either that or they will have to buy a whale-of-a-lot of flash memory :-) Craig Assumes 100 lines-per-millimeter as the standard for "professional quality". If you spent the price of a Nikon 990 on a film-based SLR body with one lens, you might do even better. But you'll be lucky to resolve even 50 lpmm (~2Mp equivalent) with a consumer-grade cameras and film.
