Why concentrate on just 30 stocks. How about the S&P 500 or NASDAQ, or broader market indexes such as the Russell 2000 or Wilshire 5000?

An interesting definition of a bear market. I would not wait a year (or up to almost 24 months according to you definition) to decide if I am in a bear market. If you remember the old GM bear indicator it used to be that if GM does not make a new high in 4 months, or it made a new four months low, a bear is in motion. Replace the GM with the NAZ or the DOW to get an equivalent more rapid indicator, and you are in a bear market right now, IMTO.
