Eigenvectors are used in Physics to determine characteristic values of a system. Certain complex systems can be described by differential equations and boundary values that can be solved using linear algebra. Ah probably has a theoretical model for describing a bottom and he looks for certain characteristics to define it. I think he was speaking metaphorically when he said eigenvector, unless his model is strictly mathematically defined.
