My respect for Nixon as a foreign policy manager derives mainly from his willingness to undertake initiatives that were totally at odds with his personal ideology, such as withdrawal from Vietnam, visiting Russia and initiating the process of strategic arms control, visiting China and paving the way for normal relations with the Chinese. Nixon was as staunch an anti-communist as ever walked the earth, and none of these moves would have come easily to him, but each was plainly necessary. That sort of pragmatism has frequently been lacking in American foreign policy, where reality often takes a back seat to ideology.

His paranoid lunacy seemed more personally and domestically oriented; he and his people did some extraordinarily dumb and unnecessary things.

A complex character, and not one to be easily dismissed.
