Amkor Falls as 1st-Qtr Profit Misses Some Forecasts (Update1)

By Cesca Antonelli

West Chester, Pennsylvania, May 5 (Bloomberg) -- Amkor
Technology Inc. shares fell as much as 14 percent after the
provider of semiconductor packaging and test services said first-
quarter profit missed the highest forecasts.

The stock fell 7 7/16 to 53 1/8 in early afternoon trading of
2.79 million shares. Earlier, it touched 52.

Amkor, based in West Chester, Pennsylvania, said after the
market closed yesterday that net income almost doubled to $37.2
million, or 27 cents a share, from $18.9 million, or 16 cents, in
the year-earlier period. That's in line with the average 26-cent
estimate of analysts polled by First Call/Thomson Financial,
though it missed forecasts of 28 cents posted on the Internet.
``The whisper numbers got a little out of hand for this
quarter,'' said Wit SoundView analyst Mike O'Brien, who rates the
stock a ``strong buy.''

The company's president, John Boruch, said yesterday on a
conference with analysts that earnings were hurt by investments
made to support ``robust growth'' in the second half.

Sales during the quarter rose 32 percent to $555 million from
$420 million. Amkor, whose top customer is Texas Instruments Inc.,
has benefited from surging demand for chips used in cellular
telephones, wireless equipment and video devices such as Sony
Corp.'s PlayStation game system.

O'Brien expects sales to grow 5 percent to 7 percent in the
June quarter and projects double-digit growth in the September and December periods.

``Those could be blockbuster quarters,'' O'Brien said.
