Curtis, Thank you for the information on light speed in a fiber. There must be a comparable measure for the speed at which electrons pass through copper (one of Maxwell eqs) I just don't have a reference here. And yes, "Pulse propagation in the soliton regime is non-linear and
many dispersion effects influence it". Hence the type of glass and chromatic dispersion controls are quite importants; but I am still wondering if a "polarized" verison of a soliton could be create and if so whether this could be exploited by all optic switches.

Actually the speed of light in materials exceeds the speed of light in vacuo by the factor of the index of refraction.
