Hi John - the thought of IBM and NT have a friendly merger can certainly be exciting; however, it is not w/o major concerns. While IBM has slimmed down alot and it has moved a lot faster than her former self circa Arkin [sp?] era, it has still a huge superstructure. There are some concerns about the recent exodus of the Lotus division. And some people missed some of its mistakes even during Gerstner's reign. For instance, it has abandoned bipolar for CMOS much too abruptly in the mid/late 90s. Hitachi was able to drive the Skyline truck thru! If I were Roth & co, I would only agree to it if 1) the price is very right <G>; 2) NT and her sub remain independent; 3) better yet, NT should assume some of the functions of existing IBM divisions and 4) NT can dip into IBM patent cookie jar.

I am a bit skeptical if IBM can meet these four conditions and others I don't think of now. And chances Mr Roth is not likely about to sell even if IBM wants NT, which is in itself quite questionable.

I must say though, IBM Canada is probably an excellent group, especially with Ms Pena <sp?> running the show. JMHO
[note: my knowledge of IBM is spotty and probably not up to date, correction requested.]

But, hypothetically, in the event there is such a possibility, IBM will benefit a lot more than NT, if the former does it right. Again, just my 2c

best, Bosco
