Dan, Prince's analysis on low share "float" implies that the institutions will not loan their shares for shorting, which is probably not true. The institutions can loan their shares to retail brokers and pick up some nice fees.

BTW, I don't believe that the Fidelity news is reflected in the AMD stock price yet. I didn't see anything on Yahoo which picks up all the stories on the business wires.

Dan3 - Re: Shorts vs Float

<Now, this per se is explosive, but when you add to the equation that Fidelity last month bought 8.7 MM shares...>

A few ideas on this one:

(1) Fidelity may have been acquiring shares earlier than they filed the 13-G (which is required when they reach 5% of the total shares). Yahoo lists two Fidelity funds with 0.5M each (as of 4/14) within the top holders. Another source (http://www.insidertrader.com/freestuff/ticker_summary.asp?search=1&criteria=amd&Submit1=GO) indicates the 10th largest at the end of 4Q99 held 2.6M so Fidelity apparently has added at least 6.1M during 2000.

(2) Fidelity may also not represent additional accumulation by institutions/mutual funds but a purchase from another big holder.

(3) I have not found a good source to identify who the 28% insiders are which makes me wonder if this number is actually not correct. Other sources have said 6% and AMD's own materials only seem to show about 3%. This would make a big difference on the % float.

(4) Some of the shorts may be hedges by holders of the convertible bonds. (Similar effect observed in APPL last year due to increase in share price above conversion price. Bond holders lock in a gain and continue to earn 6% on the bond -- sort of a "covered short"?)

It is nice to see some big money interest in the stock and there may still be too many shorts out there... Can't imagine why unless they only look at historical graphs and are ignore fundamentals.

U.S. job growth strong
8:38 a ET
The U.S. economy created 340,000 jobs in April, the government reported Friday, above Wall Street forecasts, while March's reading was revised upward, pointing to ongoing strength in the world's largest economy. The jobless rate fell to a 30-year low of 3.9 percent. Average hourly earnings rose 0.4 percent to $13.64, a shade higher than forecasts. Bonds edged lower and stock futures prices were mixed after the report.
=========================================
Not the best news, but hiring all of those census takers explains part of the increase (as opposed to explaining it as being due to an overheated economy).

Looks like that .5 increase is in the bag.

Dan/Thread,

<Shares outstanding 152 MM
Insiders (28%) 42.6 MM
Float 109.4 MM

444 Institutions own 58% of total shares (81% float) 88.6 MM

So, if Institutions stop trading we have: 109.4 MM - 88.6 MM = 20.8 MM shares in the market.

As of April 10, there are 10.8 MM shares short! (again, all figures above according to Yahoo).>

Can anyone confirm these numbers? Especially the available float?

Thanks,
Chuck

Re: "Please, please, please, find something wrong in my argument above. Otherwise, I would have to buy more AMD tomorrow!!!! We are TAKING OFF BIG TIME!!!!"

Comment: Analysis looks just fine to me and the conclusion "We are TAKING OFF BIG TIME" can also be drawn from a technical analysis of the 3 month daily trading range chart which clearly shows a penant formation which will close within the next week or two...Look for a significant change in price from existing $91 within 2 weeks!
