Interesting Palm rumour

If the following is true, it would be nice.

Meanwhile, Palm is still planning to offer a much greater range
of wireless options before the end of this year. "We're nearly
there already," Adamson said, pointing to the Palm VII and the
recently launched OmniSky and Go America services for the Palm
V. He would not be drawn on exactly how Palm will offer
increased connectivity, saying that the company is still
looking at its options. However, a source at one of Palm's
partners said that Palm was looking to offer a new range of
devices with Compact Flash cards
to allow users to buy plug-in
modems and bluetooth cards which would allow them to go
wireless.

Congratulations, Joe...

SNDK has an equity interest in SMDK, so you already own both.

Three people could KILL SmartDisk...

Mr. USB, Dr. FireWire and King Bluetooth

For now the floppy adapter seems to be a killer hardware application for SmartMedia, MemoryStick and MMC. The Mavica proved that this interface is still an essential piece of the puzzle and the gateway to many people's PC.

The arrangements with Olympus, Sony and SanDisk alone must be worth a boodle of cash.

Disclosure: I bought SMDK in the mid-30's and added substantially to my holdings when NASDAQ collapsed a few weeks ago. I still own a rather modest number of shares in this company.

Joe, SanDisk buys certain components from SMDK, and the reverse may also be true.

I see little threat from competing floppy disk adaptors for the MemoryStick or SmartMedia cards. My SanDisk Imagemate card reader transfers files from the flash card through the USB port, which in many cases has a faster transfer rate than the floppy disk input in many computers. The floppy disk adaptor that Sony uses may be fine for lower resolution images produced by most of the Sony equipment. A TIFF 2.1 mpixel image takes about 12 seconds to transfer through my USB port. I can imagine it would take about 10 times longer through a floppy disk adaptor.

The compact flash physical format is now well accepted. That doesn't mean other formats won't come into use. It's very much like 35 mm film cartridges existing along with other film sizes such as 120 or APS. CF, because of its already wide acceptance, can be thought of as the 35 mm "film" for digital cameras.
