I bet my business on the internet. The internet is not a proprietary standard. So isn't GSM, ASCII, C++ etc.

This is the collision of telecommunications industry and computer industry. Telecommunications has always been about non-proprietary standard as basics, and proprietary technologies on top, but still compatible. Just like ASCII.
