I have used limit orders with varying degrees of success. Sometimes I get a price improvement over the current price, sometimes I don't. It adds to the overhead, though, as you have to monitor the trade for execution.

However, even placing a limit to buy at the current ask does help as it ensures you won't get a price worse than that.
