Uncle Frank: As one who misunderstood the groundrules here early on but has "reformed" (well, sort of), I understand your reluctance under the way SI has proposed the "moderated" thread ground rules. I would have been a very sad day for me to have been cut off permanently - just gain too much from this thread and would miss having access to it.

However in the old Navy days there was a concept called straddling the target - a shot over, a shot under and then moving in toward it, and then a hit. Since it seems SI has proposed an overkill solution, perhaps a more practical solution could be negotiated by a thread leader such as you.

There is a need for some way to deal with way off topic stuff and insults, yet permit a couple of goofs early on.

Perhaps the thread could take this topic on for a weekend subject and see what practical ideas might materialize for discussion with SI powers that be to come to a more reasonable and practical way to "monitor" a thread - without cutting off people who may misunderstand at first and once here learn and are positive contributors.

A suggestion for discussion.
