Amkor May Make More Purchases in Next 2 Years, President Says

West Chester, Pennsylvania, May 4 (Bloomberg) -- Amkor Technology Inc., which provides semiconductor packaging and test services, will
consider several acquisitions this year and next to continue expanding its presence in Asia.

The company wants to add operations in Taiwan and enter China, and it may examine other low-cost regions in Asia, President John Boruch said on a conference call with analysts. Amkor also wants to increase its test-engineering expertise, possibly by buying a small test company, he said.

Amkor, whose top customer is Texas Instruments Inc., has benefited from surging demand for chips used in cellular phones, wireless gear and video applications such as Sony Corp.'s PlayStation game system. The company has factories in the Philippines and Arizona and earlier this week bought three South Korean plants from Anam Semiconductor Inc.

''We have a number of objectives to achieve through acquisitions going forward,'' Boruch said. ''You might see us accelerating some of those things now into 2000 and 2001.''

Amkor, based in West Chester, Pennsylvania, will also consider buying factories from its customers or forming joint- ventures with chipmakers, he said.
