Obviously, the "banana republic" business struck a chord with Miami residents, even if the tag originated elsewhere. The antics of their mayor and city manager HAVE been pretty screwy lately.

OT - I grew up in NH, reading the Manchester Union Leader back when arch-conservative William Loeb was publisher. (NH then was more libertarian than conservative, meaning government should stay out of your bedroom and your pocketbook as much as possible). Columnists and editors in the liberal Boston Globe always seemed to view New Hampshirites as a bunch of yahoos you would have to throw on their backs to get their shoes on. But Loeb was a true embarrassment IMHO - I remember editorials during the Ford adminstration like "Jerry the Jerk" and "Kissinger the K*ke". When he died his widow took over and though as conservative as he at least preserved the decencies of debate.

BTW, Jesse Jackson was strongly criticized for his "Hymietown" remark. Rudy Giuliani seems fair game to me. Bet he wouldn't hesitate to respond pretty strongly to Jackson.

" If it's wearing hoods, burning crosses, and tossing chicken bones, it'd never be posted in the "Oddly Enough" (allegedly) humorous headlines."

Well, no it wouldn't. Do you object to that?

Are you comparing the banana thing to these expressions of hatred?
[i'm not sure, not caught up on the posts]
Well if you are, i think that's funny [that you are] ... because the banana thing is funny, it's also right-on, just look at what that Carollo has made of Miami city politics ... chucking a banana in Miami is imho an ap-peel to the gods of democracy.

What in blazes are you talking about?

My post was intended to invoke a chuckle, not be taken as a personal cheap shot as you clearly have. If this is a dead horse, why are you still alongside me and others in THIS forum beating it? I can see that your passions are inflamed by your participation in this thread; we do not have this much emotional context and concerted attention on one topic in the Laughter thread.

I would not condone Jackson calling Giuliani mentally ill, nor the other way around. Certainly the referenced post, which points to a protest of dumping bananas at Miami city hall, was to show that the Mayor is continuing to defy and resist the INS's authority. Like the INS or not, they are the law, and the Mayor is perceived as kowtowing to authorities other than US sovereignty, hence the protest.

But you have made this about "liberal subgroups"; interestingly, in California where I'm from, it is the conservatives who are trying to stem immigration and the liberals who are trying to extend resources and services to illegal immigrants. But in Miami, the tables are turned with the "anti-communist" right and the "family-values" left have turned the tables, and it appears to me that both sides have shown their hypocrisy (once again) and twirled the boy like a top. I have heard nothing reasonable in the media; just posturing and rhetoric.

Certainly your positioning of Clinton as a gun-toting storm trooper is indicative of a mis-characterization? Racism is no different, just more broad band. It's also a party line that I don't subscribe to. However, you decided to post it in this thread which is not intended as a humor/irony/sarcasm thread. Your own bias can be subject to over-simplification to avoid painful truths; proceed with caution lest you snare yourself in your own trap. At least my post was not put into a serious discussion thread.
