Marty, I spoke with Q.
They do have a WCDMA chip and plan on selling plenty of them. Lead time didn't seem to be the issue more like a time frame issue, as I suspected. Should DDI go the Wcdma route this game gets delayed for 1-2 years. In my opinion that's not good. But like I predicted they once again felt that DDI w/ Wcdma made no sense what so ever!! I asked about a consortium (he wouldn't comment on Nortel) to purchase spectrum... It would be the same process similar to Mexico and elsewhere ... A minor financial commitment with partners, help plant the CDMA seed and then move on. They have lined up US operators and must bid by the 12th as well as ; they are putting together the propsal as I type this. If DDI goes the bad route and all or most all follow suit then the Q will approach one of 3 ways: Buy a co w/ GSM, JV or cross-license. He didn't feel my concern of cross-license with a LOWER than regular NET royalty stream would materialize, matter of fact he alluded to a version of Wcdma that didn't use any GSM (over my head at this point) could possibly be used (would like engineers input). I think your right that the DDI / Docomo is just like Sprint deciding to use CDMA. How could DDI possibly compete against Docomo on their playing field with the same technology and "T-like" marketing model? They can't! It is all to obvious what the correct answers shoud be, but I won't feel any comfort til DDI says YES to 1X! Remember that the detials involved are numerous in the filing so I personally don't expect to hear anything re DDI's choice til the 11th or 12th.
We spoke of Mark Roberts prediction of EU acceptace. He didn't feel him to be over zealous or speaking without merit, as a matter it sounded like Roberts knows damn well of what he speaks, the problem is just when will ETSI announce!?
I was curious about the GPRS testing announcements. Once again, technical time to market is not my forte, but it still sounds way, way off in the distance.. From the time you test to the fine tuning to the actual commercial deployment could be 2 years, maybe more.
I know that all of this has been hashed out and anybody long Q sees all of this, but I jsut had to reconfirm it one more time. I think someone said it best when they posted that "They sure wouldn't want to play poker against Dr IJ"

Have a good weekend, Phatbstrd
