I agree with your summary. However, I suspect the break-in was routinely preceded by similar acts in U.S. political history. The W'gate bunglers didn't seem the sort to have many original ideas.

Remember, in the pre-PC age, you had to get at private information the old-fashioned way -- you had to steal it.

I wonder if the Nixon camp wasn't caught by surprise that a major issue was made over the whole affair. They didn't catch on until the damage was done and Nixon was trapped.

Would have been so easy for the President to say, "If laws have been broken that is a matter for the courts to deliberate. It would be improper for me to comment further -- Now, about that tax cut....."

Unfortunately, Nixon didn't realize the rules of the game had changed.

And, in addition to his inner circle being dominated by CREEPY people, his Press Sec. was ineffective, if not inept. We didn't see the likes of Ron Z again until Dee Dee came along.
