I have read several predictions that earnings will exceed expectations. Frankly, I don't like reading this because these predictions obviously raise expectations and therefore lead to inflated whisper numbers, and therefore subsequent disappointments.

If we don't have a truly blow-out earnings AND (perhaps more importantly) sales number, there will be a short term drop. If memory serves me correctly, this has been the pattern.

However, in the long run, the price of AMAT will still depend on the rate of growth of earnings and anticipated earnings. From all reports (thanks to Brian), we're in very good shape.

"On a visit to Singapore where the company has a sales and service centre, Mr Morgan said the semiconductor industry would benefit from "new drivers of growth".

He cited these as the market for workstations and servers, fuelled by the spread of the Internet. Handphones and games
devices are another growth factor.

"Only 2 per cent of the world's population own a computer and less than 8 per cent own a handphone," he said."

Dear Brian,

Good news for AMAT and many other tech companies! Thanks for the post.
