Toronto, Ontario, May. 04, 2000 (Market News Publishing via COMTEX) -- Call-Net Enterprises Inc., the parent company of Sprint Canada Inc., announced an agreement with Metromedia Fiber Network Canada Inc. to gain local access in the Toronto area. This adds the last mile to the company's existing technologically advanced long haul fiber network and provides Call-Net with extensive inter-city fiber coverage for the entire Greater Toronto Area.

"This transaction is significant because almost 40 per cent of the traffic travelling over our network originates within the GTA," said Kevin J. Bennis, president and chief executive officer, Call-Net Enterprises. "This now provides us with a direct connection to over 200 major office buildings and key central office locations in Toronto."

The build out of local access initiative accelerates Call-Net's strategy to take a leadership role in the data services market by delivering DSL services to small and medium-sized businesses. Controlling the access will allow Call-Net to better deliver end-to-end service to its business customers, and provides the company with the ability to broaden its portfolio of broadband and Internet services much more effectively.

This day's announcement complements Call-Net's recently announced joint venture with NorthPoint Communications to deliver increased bandwidth capacity to Canadian businesses.

"We have had a strong relationship with Call-Net over the years and we are excited about expanding our relationship with them," said Nick Tanzi, President, Metromedia Fiber Network Canada Inc.
