I understood "defensive" to mean that they would not buy a company to shelve the technology, not that they wouldn't make an acquisition based on acquiring or pleasing a customer. I think that this passage clarifies the intent:

"Chambers says he would never make what he calls a defensive acquisition, like buying a Juniper just to throttle its technology."

Looks like Jorj responded already. I wouldn't consider buying a company to increase market share defensive. But perhaps this is semantics.

No Ken, that is a classic case of Cisco listening to what their customer's needs are and then going out and acquiring the products and people it requires to deliver on their customer's needs. That's not defensive, that is proactive.
