Alan,

The point I was trying to make earlier is that the direct access firms are now giving up some of that incremental profit (from new clients) with the rollout of scaled down versions of such that offer Level II, charting, Time and Sales, Market Minders, etc. at no cost. My guess is that they see a lot of potential clients out there who want to upgrade from the slow, cumbersome internet based interfaces. And I suspect there are plenty of people who see direct access as an advantage (which is not necessarily true for many) and would rather pay slightly higher commissions with a direct access broker than with an E*Trade or the other cheaper online guys. So if the direct access guys just maintain their high volume traders and can further build their customer base by offering software that's a step above the online firms doesn't it make sense they'd pursue such? It would (should) generate additional growth for them it seems from the additional commissions of the new customers who utilize the "free" software.
