BELLEVUE -- Mercata Inc.'s anticipated initial public offering, which was scheduled to take place this past week, turned out to be a no-show, with some observers wondering what's going on.

A spokeswoman for IPO Monitor (www.ipomonitor.com), a Web site that tracks IPO activity, said her company has taken Mercata off its calendar of upcoming IPOs for a lack of updated information regarding its status.

``They haven't formally postponed and they haven't formally withdrawn and they haven't priced,'' said Deborah Monroe of IPO Monitor. ``I think they are just sitting.''

Bellevue-based Mercata operates a Web site that allows individuals to buy items at discounts that vary depending on how many others also agree to purchase the same product.

Its IPO, which will be managed by Goldman Sachs & Co., Bear Stearns & Co. Inc. and FleetBoston Robertson Stephens Inc., is expected to raise as much as $100 million, according to the company's March 10 filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. The company has filed to offer shares that will be traded on the Nasdaq Stock Market, under the ticker symbol ``MCTA.''

The company is currently in its quiet period, which prevents officials from commenting on its IPO plans, and, as of Friday, it had not made any new filings since March 10.
