Your last sentence , Dave, sums up everything about trading and the market. It is not what software platform you use, it's not what routing you choose, it's not whether you rely on Level II or not. neither it is what kind of broker you use ( direct access or online ).
If one is good at identifying WHAT stock to buy and WHEN to buy it, then you will be profitable.
I have been following this thread for a while, it is an excellent thread. I just hope more discussion is aimed at techniques in choosing the right stock and the correct timing, rather the very fine intricate technicallities of order routing , and the fine prints of various ECN's regulations.
This is my personal opinion , surely many might disagree.
