CMU or "a equally ranked public school"...

Your main consideration should be where does your son want to go to school? What are his interests, strengths as a student, GPA, SAT scores? If your son has a good GPA and high SAT scores and strong abilities in computer science he will probably be able to get an academic scholarship to several universities. Universities are strongly recruiting such students, and scholarships are not based on the parents income or net worth.

Many successful people have not graduated from well known universities. (Some haven't even graduated from college.) Think of the people you know and deal with who you consider a success. Do you even know where they went to college?

"In my mind, talent plus knowledge, plus effort account for success. Gertrude Samuels."

"There is only one success---to be able to spend your own life in your own way. Christopher Morley."

I would think that quite a few factors would need to be considered when trying to decide on a college for your son...but I would be more interested in where he would do well with his interests, his goals, and his personality. Some students would do well and enjoy a large university, and others would be better with a small university.
