"I got the winner" he yelled, sounding just like some of the posters and ads that pick ten, twenty stocks or more everyday. This guy had now picked at least twenty winners at the simulcasting facility I was at and we weren't half way through the day. Now I knew, has did the all the seasoned players, that he probably didn't but we didn't care. Not the case for a young lady that wasn't doing well. She asked him what he was doing. He told her he couldn't share it but would give her his next pick if she would buy him a beer. She agreed, he picked a horse and it lost. Still he screamed "I got the winner" after the race was over. She was perplexed but he told her he had changed his mind at the last minute at the window. Now he gave her another pick. When the horses broke from the gate, the jockey on the horse he had given her, stumbled and dumped the jock right after the start. As the remaining horses approached the finish line the gent started yelling about the horse on the lead. He won and the guy yelled out, "I got the winner" as he purportedly ran to the windows. Now the lady was really teed off. She asked him when he returned why he had the winner and she didn't. He explained that at the last minute he had decided to bet two horses in the race. Well, she wasn't buying it. She asked him to show her the losing ticket. He claimed he had just cashed the winner and thrown away the loser. Big mistake as my friend slowly turned and asked "How did you cash the winner. There is a Steward's Inquiry going on due to the jock that was unseated". The guy checked out the board, confirming that was the case. Then he uttered to all "You don't have any idea how to play the horses. I'm a professional and my picks are only for sale." With that he left but not before telling all of us we were clueless. As I witnessed this I thought of the numerous stock plays that one see's everyday on the message boards being posted by individuals. I'm not talking about people posting one or two picks, but about those that post many. I thought of all the ads in the newspapers/magazines claiming so many great day, position and long term profitable trades. Just like this supposed professional horse player, no one for a fact knew he wasn't picking winners. Some thought he was. When it came down to proving it, he couldn't, but still he let us all know that we didn't know what we doing. Be careful of taking the advice of those that pick lot's of stocks but won't post or can't provided an objective third party review of the buys and sells before the fact. They are probably no different than this "tout" that was yelling "I've got the winner." If they can't prove it, you might end up losing it.
