Falkland Islands: Meeting with IPC directors in London in late May to discuss future activities Falkland Islands Offshore Oil Exploration and Onshore Geological Activities May/June Newsletter Falkland Islands Government, The Department of Mineral Resources May 5 Petroleum Geologists Convention in New Orleans The Falkland Islands Government occupied a stand at the American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG) Convention in New Orleans from 9 ? 11 April. More than 8,000 people attended the oil and gas exhibition and the Falklands was one of 35+ countries exhibiting in the International Pavilion. Dr Phil Richards discussing the Falklands oil future in the International Pavilion. The other stands in view are Nicaragua, Suriname, Bolivia and Indonesia. There was an opportunity for meetings to be arranged with companies while attending the Convention and new contacts were made during the four day event. The industry would appear to still be recovering from the phase of low oil prices in 1998/99 but there were signs that companies are looking to invest in new exploration areas. Now that the well data from the North Falkland Basin has been analysed and the presence of very rich organic source rock has been identified interest in the Falklands data on display was quite positive. Experienced exploration geologists reiterated that the potential for the area in the long term looked good. This was encouraging feedback for the Islands. Meeting with IPC A meeting with IPC directors is being arranged in London in late May to discuss future activities. IPC are licence holders of Tranche F in the North Falkland Basin. Councillor Halford will attend the meeting with FIG and BGS representatives.
