Dog, I think you were very fortunate to get away with your spoof. Legally, your guys, and you, were "trespassing" and if you used phonelines, were violating communications act. I remember 25 years ago penetrating top level DoD computer systems and accessing "secure" information. Top level people in DoD refused to take the trouble to protect their files. Security for most people remains at this level -- user unwillingness to apply the simplest protection (such as staying logged into the internet instead of turning it off.)
Every major penetration is the result of contributory negligence by the victim, Windows left unlocked.
I believe that amateurs who score big hacks like ILOVEYOU deserve a prize, not punishment. I think automobile owners who leave the doors unlocked and the keys in ignition should be prosecuted for contributing to the delinquency of minors.
