Wind River Delivers 'Plug-n-Play' WindNet Networking Protocols, Helps Make Networking a Core Embedded Technology

Monday May 8, 8:28 am Eastern Time
Company Press Release

LAS VEGAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 8, 2000--Wind River Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq:WIND - news), a leading provider of software and services for smart devices in the Internet age, today announced the WindNet(TM) series of networking protocols for embedded applications. The routing, switching and Virtual Private Network (VPN) protocols are integrated with other Wind River networking components, saving network equipment vendors time and money that would have previously been spent developing embedded protocols in-house or integrating third-party embedded software with the protocols. The availability of the WindNet protocols is part of Wind River's on-going effort to help make advanced networking a core embedded technology.

The worldwide networking market for products ranging from small office/home office (SOHO) to enterprise equipment ended 1999 at $37.5 billion, an all-time high (Cahners In-Stat), and is forecasted to reach $50 billion by 2003. Wind River also provides networking technology for carrier/service provider class equipment, a market segment projected to grow from $6.75 billion in 1999 to $12.6 billion by the end of 2000 (Infonetics Research).

The WindNet protocols include Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP), Point-to-Point Protocol Over Ethernet (PPPoE), Network Address Translation (NAT), Open Shortest Path First (OSPF), BGP, Internet Protocol Security (IPSec) and Internet Key Exchange(IKE). These protocols are all fully integrated with not only Wind River's VxWorks© real-time operating system (RTOS) but also with Wind River's embedded networking components, including the VxWorks Network Stack and Wind River's Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) environment. An addition to Wind River's already broad range of portable protocols, the tightly integrated WindNet protocols offer improved scalability and their ``plug and play'' nature allows developers to focus on product differentiation. WindNet PPP and WindNet PPPoE are available now. Beta versions of WindNet NAT, OSPF, BGP, IPSec and IKE are currently shipping with general availability later this quarter.

``The time and cost savings that the pre-integrated WindNet protocols provide over portable but un-integrated implementations illustrates the increased value Wind River can bring to network equipment developers,'' said David Fraser, vice president and general manager of Wind River's Networks business unit. ``Our customers are looking for an expanded OS, one that includes an optional set of routing, switching and VPN protocols suitable for use in a wide range of networking devices. Giving the networking industry an ever-increasing quantity and quality of pre-integrated embedded technology to meet their unique needs is helping Wind River become the operating system inside the Internet.''

To further extend the value of the WindNet protocols and Wind River's entire embedded networking technologies, Wind River offers the Network Protocol Toolkit (NPT) as a free upgrade to the VxWorks Network Stack. This toolkit facilitates third party integration of additional routing and transport protocols such as ATM, FrameRelay, AppleTalk, and others. These Application Program Interfaces (APIs) significantly ease the integration of additional, third party routing and transport protocols within Wind River's networking environment. Additionally, to save customers even more costly development time, WindNet PPP includes a Remote Access Framework that enables developers to more easily integrate Wind River's portable VPN technology or other remote access functions.

Customer Quote Addendum

``A very short development cycle is always a primary challenge in the networking market. M-Vision handles early-stage technology development for a number of networking vendors and anything we can offer our clients that saves development time and money is a welcome competitive advantage. Because Wind River has integrated key networking protocols with their industry-leading VxWorks RTOS, we can focus on other critical areas of the design cycle and turn out an innovative product for our clients more quickly and efficiently.'' -- Martin Miller, Chief Technical Officer, M-Vision

``In order to be successful in today's networking market, you must be able to deliver a unique product within a very short market window. The more time we can spend focusing on our core competencies such as the SB7016 Broadband Wireless Modem Chipset and the SB2100CB Broadband Wireless Access Module means the better the chance we have of beating our competition. By delivering pre-integrated, standard networking protocols, Wind River offers a valuable solution to many of our development challenges.'' -- Steve Goodman, VP, Business Development, SpaceBridge Networks Corporation

``Time to market is everything, when it comes to the networking field. Wind River provides both a reliable real-time operating system and, now, pre-integrated, standard networking protocols. This solution helps us bring value-added product features to the market quickly.'' -- Rajan Aiyer, VP of Marketing, Accordion Networks

``The reason we chose to use the new protocols is Wind River's excellent reputation as an industry leader. We look forward to working with Wind River to enable IP Advanced Intelligent Network services. Our customers demand reliability, scalability, security, and peak performance, which Wind River allows us to provide. The protocols' full integration with VxWorks means delivering high quality carrier-class products within very demanding market window.'' -- Andre Moskal, VP, Engineering, SS8 Networks, Inc.
