Here is a weekend report on disk drive pricing from a sample of retail distributor drives. The drives include 455 samples from 6 different distributors.

The average sample of disk drive prices dropped slightly last week.

Weekly average price change:
Weighted desktop --- down 0.8%
Less than 11gb --- down 1.1%
11gb to 21gb --- down 0.5%
Greater than 21gb --- down 0.8%
Enterprise --- up 0.4%

Monthly average price change:
Weighted desktop --- down 2.0%
Less than 11gb --- down 2.6%
11gb to 21gb --- down 1.9%
Greater than 21gb --- down 1.7%
Enterprise --- down 2.9%

Quarterly price change (monthly rate):
Weighted desktop --- down 2.2%
Less than 11gb --- down 3.1%
11gb to 21gb --- down 1.9%
Greater than 21gb --- down 1.8%
Enterprise --- down 2.4%

Last Quarterly price change (monthly rate):
Weighted desktop --- down 1.5%
Less than 11gb --- down 1.1%
11gb to 21gb --- down 1.3%
Greater than 21gb --- down 2.2%
Enterprise --- up 0.1%

This week?s prices were largely influenced by one distributor reducing the prices of 7 Fujitsu drives an average of $25 each. They also discontinued carrying 4 other Fujitsu drives. Otherwise the prices remained fairly stable.

So far this quarter the desktop market is characterized as having many new drives hitting the retail market. Seagate and IBM lead the parade of new drives. The new Seagate drives are the 10gb/platter family. The new IBM drives are 7200 rpm high capacity drives.

Regards,
Mark

Sam, I know which one you mean, the most offending person has been on "ignore" for quite some time, and fortunately, I get enough PM's from threaders asking me to stay and contribute my contrary opinions.

Good luck out there. Stormy waters ahead.
