GaN on sapphire ain't dead yet. Nichia seems to be doing OK with it. I'm not aware of any GaN LEDs that are brighter than Nichia's and according to now professor Nakamura, Nichia's patents are pretty tight. However judging by the number of people in the blue and white LED biz I'd say that there is more than one way to skin the GaN cat <gg>. I haven't looked at Nichia's patents but they may be just on the two-gas-stream MOCVD reactor.
