More Cisco news. I sure hope Analog Devices keeps their good relationship with Cisco. Cisco looks to be moving fast in the DSL area.

NorthPoint Communications and Cisco Form Broadband Alliance
Monday, May 08, 2000

NorthPoint Communications (Nasdaq: NPNT) and Cisco Systems (Nasdaq: CSCO) today announced a strategic alliance designed to accelerate the development of innovative broadband services and to extend the benefits of affordable, high-speed Internet access to more consumers and businesses nationwide.

As part of the alliance, NorthPoint will deploy Cisco?s end-to-end next-generation DSL networking platform, enabling NorthPoint to expand its service portfolio, enhance its content delivery platform, and quickly add network capacity to meet the ever-growing demand for DSL-based broadband services. NorthPoint will deploy Cisco 6160 IP DSL Switches, Cisco 6400 Universal Access Concentrators, Cisco 7200 and 7500 aggregation routers, and Catalyst 6500 multi-layer switches, achieving unmatched network intelligence and interoperability.

?Cisco, the recognized worldwide leader in IP networking, will serve as a key NorthPoint technology partner enabling the rapid development of new broadband services and advanced applications over the nation?s largest DSL network,? said Liz Fetter, NorthPoint?s president and chief executive officer. ?We are excited to add them to NorthPoint?s unmatched roster of strategic partnerships as we capitalize on new growth opportunities, including the emerging consumer market for DSL and the $6 billion content delivery market.?

?To remain competitive, service providers must deploy new, value-added services that deliver advanced applications and content specifically geared to the broadband market,? said Kevin J. Kennedy, senior vice president, Cisco Service Provider Line of Business. ?NorthPoint clearly recognizes this in their business model and is in prime position to capitalize on New World multi-service offerings by deploying Cisco end-to-end DSL solutions. In addition, NorthPoint will benefit from our GlobalDSL strategy designed to open up new broadband opportunities.?

Expanded Service Portfolio for Consumer Market

NorthPoint is building the next-generation broadband network to include inherent IP and ATM intelligence at the edge to support advanced broadband applications. Through its new alliance with Cisco and other technology partners, NorthPoint?s network is engineered with best-of-class technology platforms designed to support the broadest portfolio of broadband services delivered to more cities and towns than any other national DSL provider. NorthPoint?s deployment of the Cisco DSL platform supplements the ?IP awareness? that already exists at the edge of its nationwide network.

An alliance with Cisco further strengthens NorthPoint?s position as it expands service offerings addressing the mass consumer market for DSL services. Through strategic partnerships with Tandy RadioShack and Microsoft as well as other wholesale distribution channels, NorthPoint will offer consumers a full menu of broadband services enabling them to tap the Internet?s full multi-media potential for personal and work-related applications. 2-2-2

By deploying the flexible, multi-service Cisco 6160 IP DSL Switch, NorthPoint expands the number of broadband service options it delivers to households, telecommuters and small businesses. These choices include the full range of DSL flavors for consumers, including full-rate and G.lite-based asymmetric DSL (ADSL) solutions; full ATM quality of service (QoS) support, which is critical for the delivery of high-quality broadband content; and the service flexibility to deploy a rich set of IP-based services. In addition to its consumer-class ADSL service, NorthPoint delivers symmetric DSL (SDSL) services designed specifically for the needs of small and midsize businesses.

Cisco Enhances NorthPoint?s Content Delivery Platform

NorthPoint?s alliance with Cisco will also play a key role in ?Blast,? NorthPoint?s content delivery initiative. Launched in March, Blast is designed to dramatically improve the way consumers and businesses experience streaming media and other content and applications over the Internet. The combined use of Cisco IP DSL switches and Cisco DSL aggregation routers will enhance NorthPoint?s open content delivery platform through which Internet Service Providers (ISPs) gain access to broadband content and applications at the edge of the network and as close as possible to broadband subscribers. Cisco equipment enhances NorthPoint?s existing network and plays a key role in supporting:

ú differentiated classes of service for subscribers using NorthPoint?s network to access streaming video, audio, games and other content-rich information and entertainment applications;

ú a streamlined ISP registration process for subscribers and end-to-end service provisioning that will accelerate service turn-up;

ú the capability for NorthPoint?s ISP customers to create and offer every subscriber even individual family members -- customized Web-based portals to easily access Internet content of interest; and

ú superior content delivery mechanisms including IP multicast and Multi-protocol Label Switching (MPLS).
