>why is violent crime in Europe much less prevalent than
in the US even though the economic cost of crime is less? we have no death penalty, and yet, we have far less murders committed.

People in this country are exposed to a daily megadose of violence...it permeates the leisure time activities of the culture....movies, video games etc. The most successful political action group in our country is led by former hero Charlton Heston..the NAR .. and our society condones personal use of instruments of death. The NEWS is full of stories of sicko people who do unmentionable things to other human beings.. and many fall asleep listening to news of gruesome horror. The US is a society run amok...we export violence to the rest of the world This is a tangent..and I apologize to the thread for offtopic ranting.
