Schmandel - I agree that many MSFT environments are poorly administered and open to breach. As I said earlier, I also have seen many Unix environments where the same is true.

No one in their right mind would rely on distributed ( i.e. workstation level ) security when a single breach is enough to negate security measures in general.
Well, I'm not sure I believe your statement about how well you know the MSFT security stack after that statement. A "workstation user" would get access to resources protected by system level security by what mechanism?

Perhaps you could detail such a scenario for me - as a general statement, that is nonsense.

re: Seems like you're trying really hard to blame those victims

I don't blame the victims. Nor do I blame the company which supplied the OS and apps which happen to be part of the infrastructure of this attack. But regular backups of critical data would also make the impact of a virus like this much less painful. How many people do them? It is easy enough to take care of.

MSFT has included technology in Win2K which makes it almost trivially easy to restore a machine to a previous known good state. That also would make the impact of a virus like this insignificant - aside from the inconvenience of the mail bouncing around.

The ISPs are really the only ones in a position to work against these attacks, or denial of service attacks, or any of a host of other threats. They are just begining to understand that, and most are too lazy or too cash-strapped to go after the problem.
