DTV INDUSTRIAL ALLIANCE OF CHINA AND SUN COLLABORATE TO CREATE CHINA'S INTERACTIVE DIGITAL TELEVISION STANDARD

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

CABLE 2000, NEW ORLEANS, LA -- May 8, 2000 -- The Digital Television Industrial Alliance (DTVIA) of China and Sun Microsystems, Inc. today announced their intend to collaborate in the definition of an interactive digital television specification for China's TV industry. Under this agreement, DTVIA and Sun will work together to define the standard for next generation interactive digital television leveraging Sun's Java TV[tm] application programming interface (API) specification. Once completed, DTVIA will submit the specification to be considered as China's national interactive digital television standard.

DTVIA is an organization made up of leading TV manufactures, research institutes and broadcasting academies working on the key technologies and specifications for the China TV industry to transfer from analog to digital.

"The interactive technology and standard is very important in China DTV development," said Chen Ke, chief scientist of DTVIA and Vice Chairman of the National Standard Committee of Audio, Video, and Multimedia System and Technology. "We have studied Java[tm] technology for a long time, and our engineers believe that Java technology will be a key enabler for interactive service in China, ensuring that interactive television moves smoothly to digital. We are happy to collaborate with Sun to develop the Chinese extension to the Java TV API."

"Sun is extremely pleased with the opportunity to assist DTVIA in their definition of the next generation interactive digital television standard for China," said Curtis Sasaki, director, Product Marketing, Consumer Technologies at Sun. "By building this new extension on top of the same Java TV API specification that has been adopted by DVB, content vendors will benefit greatly by being able to create interactive television content that will run in many parts of the world."

The Java platform is a cornerstone for the development of interactive television. The Java platform and the Java TV API ensure global interactive digital television content interoperability. To this end, DVB has adopted Java technology as the foundation of its DVB Multimedia Home Platform (DVB-MHP) specification. Java technology is also being considered for inclusion by US terrestrial and cable standard bodies and industry forums.

Java technology is an extremely rich programming platform that offers content developers a high degree of control and flexibility in the creation of compelling interactive television content. Besides portability for content and creative control, Java technology also offers a robust security model that allows for the safe network delivery of content.
