UMC Group speeds up factory construction in Tainan science park

Taipei, May 7, 2000 (CENS)--The United Microelectronics Corp. (UMC) Group, Taiwan's second largest provider of wafer foundry services, has geared up execution of its NT$500 billion investment in the Tainan Science-based Industrial Park (TSBIP) located in Tainan County, southern Taiwan.

The large investment project consists of the construction of four 12-inch wafer plants and two plants for large-sized TFT-LCDs (thin film transistor-liquid crystal displays), chairman John Hsuan of the UMC Group indicated. But the investment project may be adjusted to best fit in with market situation, Hsuan added.

Two 12-inch wafer plants and a TFT-LCD plant are currently under construction, and construction of the remaining three plants will begin successively, with one each year. A 12-inch wafer plant is scheduled for commercial operation in June next year, and the UMC Group will recruit 600-800 employees for the plant early next year.

The UMC Group and Hitachi of Japan are constructing a joint venture 12-inch wafer plant in Japan. The UMC Group gives the first priority to the plant in terms of commercial operation, therefore the commercial operation of the 12-inch wafer plant in the TSBIP will actually start several months after Japan.

In addition to the UMC Group, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., Ltd., Taiwan's largest provider of wafer foundry services, is also constructing wafer plants in the TSBIP. Moreover, Mosel Vitelic plans to invest NT$90 billion to build 12-inch wafer plants in the TSBIP, while Silicon Integrated System Corp. will establish two 12-inch wafer plants there with an investment of more than NT$100 billion.
