ADSL Interoperability Between Industry Leaders Paves Way For Wide Range of Consumer Products

May 8, 2000 09:06 AM Eastern Time
LAS VEGAS, NetWorld+Interop, May 8 /PRNewswire/ -- PairGain(R) Technologies, Inc. PAIR , the power behind DSL access(TM), today announced another interoperability milestone. Together with Conexant Systems, Inc. CNXT , one of the world's leading providers of communications semiconductor solutions, PairGain demonstrated complete ADSL interoperability between its Avidia(R) System and Conexant's PCI reference design based on its AccessRunner(TM) ADSL chipset. The Avidia System is a next-generation DSL access switch that supports both full rate ADSL (G.dmt) and splitterless G.lite. AccessRunner is Conexant's new standards-compliant chipset, which also supports both ADSL technologies. PairGain's complete line of interoperable DSL solutions is on display this week in booth #915.
Conexant's PCI reference design builds on the foundation established by its earlier ADSL central office device sets that were based on technology from a 1998 transfer agreement with PairGain. Conexant remains PairGain's exclusive partner for the design, manufacturing and marketing of the Falcon chip as an integrated solution for a wide variety of applications. This latest chipset and reference design improves on the earlier generation by incorporating the latest ITU standards for the dual-mode capability of supporting full rate ADSL and G.lite.

"To really demonstrate the market potential of a product, you need to demonstrate interoperability based on ratified standards," said Nick Burd, director of ADSL products at Conexant. "Tigris is a fully compliant solution, and our lab demos at PairGain clearly prove the viability of ADSL."

Licensees of Conexant's ADSL PCI reference design can now implement an application quickly and leverage the growing worldwide base of PairGain Avidia customers. Conversely, Avidia customers can offer their subscribers a wide range of compatible CPE solutions based on Conexant's AccessRunner ADSL chipsets.

"Together we've taken another step toward the goal of providing consumer-level interoperability," added Steve Robinson, senior vice president at PairGain. "The day is on the horizon when customers can walk into a store and buy ADSL-compliant products that are truly plug-and-play."
