i mentioned this in my last post...before reading this one. i don't know if you're familiar with Robert Gordon's study on productivity. it makes for very interesting reading:

he argues basically that one sector of the economy, namely computer manufacturing, heavily skews the productivity data released by the government. this is due to the hedonic pricing bag of tricks, which btw. also distorts inflation and GDP data.

Jim Grant published a more recent study by two US economists that also looks at the productivity miracle in a critical manner:
