John, Re: "I wish I had a better understanding of this marketplace"
I am no infrastructure expert and I guess I am in the same boat as you are. All I know is that I think Intel recently said they expected a growth rate of 50% a year from a base of 2 billion.
I am not sure that an infrastructure expert can predict what the outcome will be based upon previous years expert opinions regarding Intel. Remember the days of IBM, Apple and Motorola and the Power PC.
From all I can determine some of the competitors are first of all IBM, C-Port, LSI Logic, T Square, Mips Technologies, Motorola, & MMC Networks. So the field looks a little crowded.
If anything Intel's plans are clear and focused. I think it is encouraging to see new products coming out from technology derived from newly acquired companies like Level One and IPivot. Whether they will be winners time will tell. For me it has always been a horse race.
