Chic I think when it is all said and done, Merced will be the most expensive mistake in the history of MPU design.

I totally agree. MHz will be the achillies heel of Itanium.
Let Intel and Itanium do the dirty work and step in with a scalable chip...

You could also ask why IBM produced the original PC using an Intel chip when they already had S/370, 4680, Series/1, AS/400...

I have no hangup with the strategy of producing a best-of-breed system using an OEM processor, which was presumably the objective in this case. Problem is they are building a Formula 1 racing car around a dud engine.
