HIGHLIGHTS FROM CABLE CONFAB: ETV WILL BE BIG
The National Cable Television Association. annual convention was held
this week in New Orleans. Among the highlights: Another design win for
Liberate Technologies (LBRT $28-41/64). Liberate licensed its enhanced
TV software to Cancom, the leading provider of satellite television
services in Canada, and named Cancom its exclusive satellite partner
in that nation. The company also announced a partnership with National
Semiconductor (NSM $52) to help set-top box makers and network
operators lower costs and reduce time to market. Microsoft (MSFT
$67-7/8) and AT&T (T $35-1/2) expanded their broadband television
partnership as AT&T agreed to license Microsoft's TV platform software
to use in ETV deployments. While it is unclear to us how substantial
this agreement is and how it affects Liberate's opportunity to become
AT&T's platform, it indicates to us that other big companies are
committed to the future of ETV. We were impressed with the AOL TV
display at Liberate's booth, which attracted large crowds. AOL TV's
launch is on track for release next month, and we believe it will be
received well, as it appears to strike an appropriate mix of active
and passive entertainment and information
