What's not evident is for example: Does Cisco yet have the pieces to complete a transition to optical? I'm not sure I understand how the parts fit together yet and was hoping someone else had some ideas. It seems to me that they would not want to duplicate companies where buying is cheaper, but I get the idea that the optical network is not fully formed yet.

Good questions. I don't believe that Cisco has all the peices, yet, but they are coming. If you look at the offerings from Pirelli, Monterey Systems, and Cerent, you start to see some of the picture. But in truth, we don't even exactly know the form of the "all optical" network yet. There are several companies basing switches on mirror technology (Xros). Other basing it on something called Mems (I have no idea what this is). At this time, I think it is much more cost effective to switch electronically, but carry optically, so I'm not surprized that Cisco doesn't have the entire picture (just like you said). What's better, OC192 or DWDM (8)x OC48. One of them is certainly cheaper.
