SAN JOSE (CBS.MW) -- Soaring demand for telecommunications and other non-PC electronics boosted global sales of semiconductors to a record $14.96 billion in March, the Semiconductor Industry Association reported Tuesday.

Sales were up 33.8 percent over March 1999 levels and up 2.8 percent from February.

"The strong sales in the first quarter put the industry ($SOX: news, msgs) on course for another record sales year," said SIA President George Scalise.

The biggest areas of growth were in flash memory (up 197 percent from a year ago), programmable logic (up 78 percent) and digital signal processors (up 53 percent), the SIA said. These semiconductors are used in wireless phones, cars and home appliances.

"This explosion in wireless and wired communications is the next wave of the Internet which will help drive the demand for silicon chips," the industry trade group said.

By contrast, the dynamic random access chips common in computers grew just 33 percent over the year.

Regionally, growth was strongest in Asia, where sales rose 46.1 percent from a year ago. In Japan, sales gained 38.4 percent. Sales increased 25.1 percent in the Americas and 29.2 percent in Europe.

In premarket trading, Intel (INTC: news, msgs) was up 5/8 to 118 1/4 while Applied Materials (AMAT: news, msgs) gained 9/16 to 96 1/4.

The Philadelphia semiconductor index lost 5.3 percent Monday
