There is, indeed, something to that, Charles. On the other hand, we have won a fair amount in the last 20 years. There are personality types for all occasions, and someone like Newt was as obsessed with politics as anyone else, and willing to let his marriage suffer because of it in a way that a lot of us would not be. But there are also fundamental strengths that we have that the liberals must overcome, like being more in tune with the electorate. That is why there is such an attempt to discredit. Among men, Republicans always win national elections, for a couple of decades. Among women, they sometimes lose, but it is close.
Among whites, Republicans always win. The little secret of the Democratic Party is that, all other things remaining the same, if African- Americans began to vote like Hispanics, giving about a third of their vote to the GOP, the Democrats would never get the White House, and probably would relinquish the Congress, for the foreseeable future. Think about it: Clinton could not win a majority (even for the second term, with a good economy), but basically got in on a split Republican- inclined vote, and portrayed himself as a virtual Republican, anyway. How many Southern con men does the Democratic Party have in the wings?
