Worldwide Semiconductor Sales Reach Industry High, Totaling
$14.9 Billion in March
SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 9, 2000--Worldwide
sales of semiconductors reached an all time record high of
$14.96 billion in March 2000, increasing from $11.18
billion from March 1999, a 33.8% year to year increase, the
Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) reported today.

``The strong sales in the 1st quarter put the industry on
course for another record sales year,'' stated George
Scalise, SIA president.

``Product sectors, in addition to microprocessors and DRAMs
used in PC's, that played a major role in the March sales
include Flash, Digital Signal Processors, programmable
logic and standard cell,'' Scalise stated. ``These
semiconductor products can be found in many consumer goods
including cellular applications, automobiles and home
appliances.''

The most dramatic increases were in Flash which increased
197.5% from 1st quarter 1999. Programmable Logic increased
77.8%, DSP 52.8%, application specific MOS Logic 59.5% and
DRAM 33.4%.

International Data Corp. (IDC) estimates that by 2004, some
600 million people worldwide will connect to the net via
PCs, while 1.4 billion will hook up through cell phones.
Another 1.4 billion will connect through wired phones. This
explosion in wireless and wired communications is the next
wave of the Internet which will help drive the demand for
silicon chips.

In the Asia Pacific and Japan markets, the industry grew at
46.1% and 38.4%, respectively from last year. The Americas
market was up 25.1% from last year, and Europe's sales grew
29.2%.

The SIA's Global Sales Report (GSR) is a three month moving
average of sales activity. The GSR is tabulated by the
World Semiconductor Trade Statistics (WSTS) organization,
which represent some 70 companies.

The SIA is the leading voice for the semiconductor industry
and has represented U.S.-based manufacturers since 1977.
SIA member companies comprise more than 90 percent of U.S.-
based semiconductor production. Collectively, the chip
industry employs a domestic workforce of 284,000 people.
