Telus ISP Program Enhances Newbridge Market Lead in
Canadian Standards-based DSL Market: Mutual success in
business-to-business broadband access market continues to
unite industry champions

MAY 9, 2000
OTTAWA, CANADA--TELUS and Newbridge Networks (NYSE: NN; TSE: NNC)
today forecasted that, as a result of continued strong demand,
ADSL (asymmetric digital subscriber line) capacity in the TELUS
network would total more than 80,000 lines by the end of 2000. The
deployment has been fuelled by the success of the TELUS
Accelerated High Speed Internet Service Program. This announcement
underscores the market lead established by TELUS in broadband
services to Canadian corporations, and reinforces Newbridge's
position as the number one supplier of standards-based DSL in
Canada.

"Newbridge support has helped TELUS in earning an international
award for its ADSL deployment," said Mark Schnarr, TELUS's Vice
President of Internet Services. "In addition, 79 percent of our
ADSL customers say they are very satisfied, or extremely
satisfied, with our service."

TELUS, an innovative service provider with its roots in the
Western Provinces, has leveraged a first-to-market approach to the
broadband services sector to expand into Ontario and Quebec. It
won early success with a high speed LAN Interconnect service
targeted at Canadian businesses, and has capitalized on that
success with new offerings targeting business Internet
applications and corporate teleworking. All services are built
upon Newbridge DSL and ATM (asynchronous transfer mode) broadband
solutions, which combine to guarantee end-to-end quality of
service.

Last week at DSLcon Canada, Newbridge announced that, by its own
estimates, it held 90 percent of the standards-based DSL market in
Canada, based on shipments. Its footprint as of the end of April
2000 was more than 140,000 ports, and growing strongly. Worldwide
the Newbridge footprint extends to reach 1.7 million DSL
subscribers including those in the United States, United Kingdom,
Western Europe and Asia Pacific.

"We're extremely proud of what we have achieved in partnership
with TELUS," said Kevin Rankin, Vice President of Broadband Copper
at Newbridge Networks. "What Newbridge does better than anyone
else is build broadband networks that allow new services to be
created and deployed rapidly, reliably and profitably. In Canada,
where competition from cable is fierce, TELUS's success is based
on being able to offer dedicated broadband access and assured
quality of service, none of which is available in the shared media
world of cable."

About Newbridge DSL

Newbridge first introduced DSL solutions in 1998, as a natural
complement to its renowned core broadband solutions. Recently
Newbridge announced a family of high density DSL line cards. These
line cards include the 24-port ADSL card, the 32-port IDSL card
and the 48-port MultiDSL card that allows remote soft provisioning
to support 2B1Q SDSL, HDSL-2 and G.SHDSL symmetrical services. By
taking advantage of the Newbridge 350 Integrated Versatile
Services Node (IVSN) access platform, service providers can offer
a rich selection of value-added services such as LAN interconnect,
virtual private networks (VPNs), 56 kb/s and T1 replacement, and a
series of legacy services without compromising QoS.

Tough call for me right now Tony. I think the multiple gap between ALA and the larger players will continue to diminsh. Based on this, I think the one analysts price target of roughly 400 Euros is achievable later this year. My calls all along on ALA have been out 3-9 months. Shorter term, just too many variables, but if general market conditions improve over the next week or two, I think it takes out its all time high of 55.5 and perhaps touches 59-61 before taking a break (approx 330 Euros). I'm still hoping to get out of my June options in the 55-60 range. I'd like to see it blast right through 55 soon.

Remember, these are not official SF calls, just speculation<g>. Sure looks like it wants to go higher. I notice CSCO and IBM trading up slightly after hours. Here's to hoping for a decent story out of DELL and AMAT yet this week.

Maybe Tunica or others will have a more TA oriented, or other opinion, as I just kind of mix together a little bit of TA, FA, general US market conditions, general global market conditions, pending events and some good old fashioned gut feel.

regards,
