Headquarters off Loop 360 to open by end of year; other operations to stay in Round Rock

Just five years after Dell Computer Corp. moved its headquarters to Round Rock, the company is moving it back to Austin -- sort of.

The company has leased 80,000 square feet in the Las Cimas office complex, off Loop 360 between Austin and West Lake Hills, for its world headquarters. While the building is just outside Austin city limits, the city has authority over development there.

About 100 of the company's senior executives -- including Chairman Michael Dell and his top advisers -- are expected to go to work at the building by the end of the year. Along with the company's headquarters, the offices will be home to Dell's new venture-capital subsidiary and other operations.

Dell officials said there were no immediate plans to move any of the company's other operations from Round Rock, and that the region's biggest private employer doesn't play favorites between the two cities.

"We think of ourselves as more of a Central Texas company than a Round Rock or Austin company," said spokeswoman Cathie Hargett, adding that Dell has had seven different headquarters buildings in 16 years. "We look at the address as a technicality."

"What they will end up with, I think, is . . . an Austin address," added Austin Mayor Kirk Watson. "But they are a regional entity, and I've always thought of them as a regional entity. So I think it's more a formality for them."

Dell expanded to Round Rock in 1993 after it bargained for a lucrative tax break from the city, though much of the company's operations are still in Austin.

Last year Round Rock received more than $9 million in sales taxes and $160,000 in property taxes from Dell, according to the company
