William, what's up with all these patent law suites? It seems to me...only the lawyers are making profits.

NEW YORK, May 5 (Reuters) - Internet advertising network 24/7 Media Inc. <TFSM.O> said on Friday it filed suit against rival online advertiser DoubleClick Inc. <DCLK.O> in Federal Court for the Southern District of New York, alleging patent infringement.

New York-based 24/7 Media said in a statement the suit seeks to bar DoubleClick from further infringement as well as monetary damages.

At issue is the use by DoubleClick, which is widely seen as the leader in the online advertising market, of an enabling technology for DoubleClick's DART ad serving system that enables it to target specific ads to certain users based on usage patterns.

That enabling system is the subject of 24/7's patent, which is called "On-Line Interactive System and Method for Providing Content and Advertising Information to a Targeted Set of Viewers."

Elizabeth Wang, DoubleClick's vice president and general counsel, said in a statement, "We understand that a complaint was filed. We have not yet seen the complaint. However, based on our initial review of the patent, we believe that any claim of infringement would be baseless. We will defend ourselves vigorously."

Shares of 24/7 rose 1/8 to 21 early in the day and shares of DoubleClick shares fell 11/16 to 61-1/4.
