If you combine my trading account, my holdings in stocks, and my IRA, my short positions are about 40% of everything I hold. The longs are oils and oil royalty trusts (about 40%), precious metals and mining (about 10%), and a small position in security/explosive detection systems and the rest in cash. I don't depend on any of this for current income or retirement.

I would not encourage anyone to short any individual stock. Holding XLK short is harrowing enough, but you know it can't run away with you overnight.
