Each memory chip has a color register that has to be loaded initially. In the example below, there are 16 columns of blockwrite every 2 clocks. The memory below even supports Byte-enables (very useful).

Doubt if you can get 4ns DDR SGRAM, but the part number exists :)

I actually can remember the FP->EDO->SDRAM switches back then, there were some naysayers, but it's never never never been this intense or controversial. Good luck.
