Firing Squad on overclocking the new stepping of Piii:
firingsquad.com

Conclusion
It looks like we don't have much of a conclusion for you. One processor only got up to 672MHz while the other reached 858MHz. Yes, 858MHz may sound like a lot, but we were able to get a cA2 SECC2 P3-600E up to 864MHz over a month ago.
What do our overclocking results tell us? Almost nothing. If we were able to overclock both chips to the mid-900s we might have been able to make a tentative statement about the new core stepping, but the CPUs didn't cooperate.

We suspect that we won't see many good overclocking chips in the 600-650 speed range until Intel is able to overcome the high speed P3 shortage. It'll be time to buy with an intent to overclock when the 1GHz chips start appearing in the aftermarket. By that time, P3 yields should be high enough to supply a steady stream of good, overclockable 600s and 650s. We're pretty impatient over here, so we'll have periodic P3-600E and P3-650E overclocking tests even if we don't see 1GHz CPUs floating around.

Did we waste our time with these processors? We'll find out by the end of the week. You, see the new cB0 stepping is supposed to also enable SMP support, and we'll be conducting plenty of SMP testing over the next few days.

I guess we can put Processor Boy's claim to a "leap" Piii clockspeed to rest as well.

Anyway, I think my claim of a $50 increase in ASP from Q1 level to Q3 level is beginning to look more and more realistic.

Best of luck. I bought more AMD at $82 (posted here in real time), so far I have timed my incremental buys in AMD very well, so lets hope it continues.

Mani,

I am hoping for $78...will probably incrementally screw myself and see it go back up to $90 by Friday.

OT:

ALL:

Anyone else here downloaded the new Microsoft Media Player 7.0.

I've played with it, and it may be the best software to come out of Redmond in a long time. They seem to actually get the whole digital music thing.

Regards,

Steve
